Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about UnbreakableID, our technology, and how to get started.
For Users
What is UnbreakableID?
UnbreakableID is a secure, interoperable digital identity solution offered as a SaaS platform. It enables institutions, partners, and users to issue, hold, and verify credentials using open standards like OID4VC, anchored in decentralized trust frameworks.
What is a digital credential?
A digital credential is a cryptographically signed proof of identity or attribute — such as membership in a DAO, age verification, or ownership of an NFT. It’s anchored to a blockchain address and stored in your UbID Vault, so you control when and how it’s shared.
Do users need special apps?
No. Users only need the UbID Vault, which works alongside their preferred Web3 wallet. The Vault manages credentials, while the wallet handles transactions. This separation keeps identity private and wallets secure
How is this different from regular logins?
Traditional logins rely on usernames and passwords stored by a service. With UnbreakableID, you authenticate using verifiable credentials that you control. Services never see your password or gain direct access to your wallet — they only verify the credential you choose to share.
How is user privacy protected?
- Private keys are never stored on servers. Users control their ID Vault.
- No centralized tracking. Presentations are peer-to-peer and consent-based.
- Only necessary attributes are shared.
What devices and platforms are supported?
UnbreakableID works across all modern browsers (Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox), mobile devices (iOS and Android), and tablets. We utilize QR codes and deep links for seamless credential flows across devices.
For Developers
What technologies power UnbreakableID?
- OID4VC: OpenID for Verifiable Credentials for seamless exchange.
- BNSv2: Anchoring identifiers on the Stacks blockchain.
- Stacks & Bitcoin: Secured by Bitcoin’s finality.
- DIDs: Cryptographically verifiable identity for all parties.
What is a Decentralized Identifier (DID)?
A DID is a unique identity key anchored to a blockchain address. It lets you prove who you are in decentralized systems without relying on centralized accounts or passwords.
What are Verifiable Credentials (VCs)?
VCs are digital proofs issued by trusted entities (banks, DAOs, universities, governments, platforms, institutions, etc). They are stored in your UbID Vault and can be presented to verifier apps to prove facts like membership, eligibility, or ownership.
What are Zero‑Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs)?
ZKPs let you prove something is true without revealing the underlying details. For example, you can prove you’re over 18 without sharing your birthdate, or prove DAO membership without exposing your wallet history.
What’s included in the Verifier SDK?
The SDK includes credential request templates, return endpoint handling, cryptographic signature validation, automatic trust framework integration, and optional support for biometric verification.
How does identity relate to transactions?
Identity and transactions are separated. Identity is verified through credentials in the UbID Vault. Transactions are prepared by verifier apps but must be signed by you with your wallet. This separation ensures privacy, security, and user control.
Can UnbreakableID work across different blockchains?
Yes. Credentials are anchored to blockchain addresses and designed for interoperability. They can be used across ecosystems like Bitcoin, Stacks, Ethereum, and more.
For Institutions
Who can use UnbreakableID?
Institutions (universities, banks, government agencies issuing credentials), business partners (integrating as Verifiers or branded Issuers), and end users (holding and presenting credentials via their ID Vault).
What’s the difference between packages?
- Default (ubid.app): Use UnbreakableID’s domain and infrastructure for fast deployment.
- Branded: Institutions can issue credentials under their own domain, with custom branding and user flows.
Is UnbreakableID interoperable?
Yes. We support OID4VC and SD-JWT formats, trust list validation for Issuers, cross-wallet compatibility with other compliant ID Vaults, and Travel Rule compliance for financial institutions.
What compliance frameworks are supported?
GDPR, eIDAS 2.0, the Travel Rule, and sector‑specific governance in healthcare, education, and finance.
What happens if a credential is revoked?
Revoked credentials are marked invalid by the issuer. Verifier apps will reject them automatically, ensuring trust and compliance are maintained.
Do institutions need to build everything themselves?
Not necessarily. Institutions can start with the Default Package for quick pilots, upgrade to the Branded Package for custom flows, or use Advanced Services for complex integrations. For teams without in‑house developers, turnkey enterprise integration is available.
